How I Experience Music, Art and Beauty Differently

When people think of art or beauty, they often think of what they see. Colors, paintings, museum galleries and scenery are closely linked with the idea of only seeing the beauty with your eyes. But that's not true! I've also experienced learning and playing the piano by hearing. As someone who is blind, I understand that I experience beauty differently, what that means and how that makes me feel more connected to everything I do. When I feel connected, it makes me feel cheerful about what I'm experiencing like playing my favorite piece, which is the Turkish March in A Minor by Mozart. Or thinking how beautiful my Mom is because I can feel the love through her words, actions and hugs. She's beautiful!

I don't look (see) the way most people do, but I feel it sometimes literally. I've gone to a few art museums and I was able to explore through my fingers. I sensed smooth surfaces, raised lines, edges, and various materials in order to (see) the artwork. I'm able to understand the meaning of a painting when the story is told with voice and when my own fingers feel the surface of the artwork. I believe I can understand the emotion and intention of the artist. When I hear or play piano, I can feel the rhythm in my face because it makes me smile. I can hear it in my head as I play along with the music. When I use the pedals, it makes the notes sometimes short or long and I can feel that, too. I pick up subtle changes in tones and rhythms that others might miss and this helps me to understand emotions. In the world that often defines value by what you can see, I've learned to appreciate what can be felt, heard, sensed and shared. I think that art, music and beauty is in everyone and it doesn't matter whether you can see it or not. Illustration of a blind woman with a peaceful expression, eyes closed, gently touching a flower with one hand and resting the other over her heart. Surrounding her are abstract waves, leaves, musical notes, and rippling water—symbolizing sensory connection. At the top, a quote reads \"I experience beauty differently—and that makes me feel more connected to everything I do.\"
